To the traditional glass plate and film
based sources for the fine print, the
digital camera's memory card, and the
computer file, must now be added. In
addition, the importance of the
differences between "positive" and
"negative" or "Color" and "B&W", has
been reduced with the appearance of the
digital data file as the source of the
final image. The term "digital negative"
has entered our vocabulary - in fact the
term "negative" may well retreat into
history.
Perhaps it is time to adopt Ansel
Adams' metaphor and use the term "Score"
to refer to whatever it is that contains
the information needed to create the final
"Performance".
